Find out more about Carrera
Carrera have always been at the forefront of design when it comes to eyewear. Not only do they come up with fashionable, functional products, but the founder even invented a new kind of plastic specifically for his market-leading spectacles!
The origin of Carrera
In 1956, Carrera was launched by Wilhelm Anger as a sport goggles company. At the brand’s inception, Anger chose the name ‘Carrera’ after the Carrera Panamericana, inspired by the exciting, demanding motorsport.
At first Carrera exclusively made sports eyewear such as ski goggles and cycling glasses. Later, as the brand grew in popularity, they added sport-inspired fashion eyewear to their range. Today, there are designer Carrera glasses and sunglasses to suit every taste!
Anger set up his company to design outstanding eyewear. In 1964, keeping true to his mission, he patented a new plastic called Optyl. This substance was specifically designed for the manufacture of glasses – weighing 20% less than acetate while much harder wearing. Optyl is ideal for eyewear and is still used in high end designer glasses to this day.
In 1966 Carrera became part of the Safilo Group and the brand grew momentum. Now, Carrera glasses and sunglasses are chosen all over the world for their chic design and outstanding craftsmanship. You’ll often spot Carrera glasses on the red carpet at Hollywood’s most prestigious events.
