About the BrandFew world-renowned designers can say they started at the tender age of five. Michael Kors, however, is the exception. Despite showing early flair for the fashion industry, we doubt he could have dreamed of the fame and acclaim that his brand now enjoys…
Michael Kors’ HistoryKarl Anderson Jr was born in 1959 on Long Island, New York. When he was five, his mother remarried and gave him the option to change his name. This he did: choosing Michael as his first name and Kors as his surname, after his new stepfather. Kors’ mother was a model and this meant that he was engulfed in world of fashion from the very beginning. It was the occasion of his mother’s wedding that also revealed Kors’ budding talent for design. Upon seeing her wedding dress, Kors told his mother it was too fussy with too many bows. She paid attention to his suggestions and consequently the dress was altered. Moving forward to Kors’ teenage years, he maintained an interest in the fashion industry. Unlike many boys of his age, Kors spent his time designing and selling clothes from his parents’ basement, which he named the Iron Butterfly. Upon finishing high school, Kors decided to seriously pursue a career in fashion and enrolled at The Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. Despite the pedigree of this school, Kors decided to cut his studies short in order to take a job at a boutique. It was a risk, but the young designer was given a small space in the store where he displayed and sold his own clothing. Fortunately the gamble paid off when Bergdorf Goodman’s director spotted Kors’ designs at the boutique. She asked if he would be willing to present his work to her buyers and of course he said yes. Since that moment, the Michael Kors brand has grown beyond recognition and is now an internationally famous design house.
Recent NewsKors broke into the industry by designing women’s clothing. However, the brand has now expanded to include men’s clothing along with accessories such as handbags, shoes, designer glasses and sunglasses. Business hasn’t always gone perfectly and Michael Kors’ company had to bounce back from bankruptcy in 1993 to regain prominence as a key fashion brand. In 1997 Kors became a designer for Celine, which was an important moment in his career. From there he’s gone from strength to strength and today, celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence, Angelina Jolie and Kate Middleton choose to wear Michael Kors.
